Simple Tools to Create Mobile Apps

19Jan10

Popular Science has a great article this month on some cool tools for mobile app creation:

  • SWEBAPPS – Build iPhone sites using templated features (buttons), such as Portfolio, Contact, Facebook, Locations, News, etc.
  • AppBreeder – Also allows you to build apps via templates.  They have a custom app option and claim to deploy to iPhone, Blackberry and Android formats/appstores.  At the time of this post, they were offline until 1/14 due to demand.
  • PhoneGap – Allows you to repurpose existing HTML, Javascript, CSS web apps and deploy to Android, Blackberry and iPhone.  This one is open source, and seems a little less polished, but a lot more flexible.

The latter two are interesting because they solve an interoperability problem that is likely to get worse as the phone/web wars continue.  This is part of an encouraging trend of abstracting application development from languages to WYSIWYG web interfaces.  Examples include:

  • WidgetBox – an online tool that allows users to build simple apps (videos, forms, counters, simple choices) to be embeded in other sites.
  • SproutBuilder – Similar to WidgetBox, but more focused on social networking.  Really nice WYSIWYG interface.
  • GoogleForms – pretty self-explanatory.  Part of Google docs and very easy to build online forms and gather feedback.  Yahoo Groups has similar database tools.
  • Yahoo Pipes – A relatively simple graphical tool for creating mash-ups of various APIs.
  • Zoho Creator – Allows you to build simple DB applications through a web interface.  You can apparently deploy to Google AppEngine apps from ZohoCreator.
